65 Bookmakers Arrested by the Anti-Terrorist Squad in India
On July 23, 2007, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in India confiscated 173 cellular phones, 10 laptop computers and 15 desktop personal computers and arrested 65 suspects.
7 of those suspects are famous bookmakers all over the country. The court assigned all 65 of the suspects to police custody for the next 10 days.
K.P. Raghuvanshi, the Joint Commissioner of Police of the Anti-Terrorist Squad, said that they received a reliable tip that there were some suspicious people in Mumbra who did not live in the area. They have kept watch on the establishment in Kismat Society.
After keeping the place under surveillance for several days, they raided it. Raghuvanshi said that the bookmakers they have arrested are Prafull (Dombivali), Paithvi (Mulund), Satish (Mulund), Sajan (Malad), Deepak (Dahisar), Naresh (Dahisar) and Amit (Dahisar).
He said that they have not recovered any cash for bets from the establishment so they suspect that payment for the best is made through Hawala.
Raghuvanshi added that with the cooperation of computer experts, they are trying to get the data from the computers and laptops.
This will help officers investigate the whole betting racket and mobile gambling. Raghuvanshi also said that the bookmakers conducted their business through their mobile phones because it is harder to trace.
